Multiplication with arrays
We've discussed multiplication as repeated addition. Now we are going to look at multiplication in terms of arrays. Arrays are visual or graphical models of objects in equal rows and columns. Look at the pictures below; only one set of circles is in an array. Which one do you think is an array, with equal amounts going across and down?
If you said "C" then give yourself a pat on the back! You're correct! Only the circles in "C" make up an array; there are 3 circles in every row and 4 circles in every column. Now how do you think we can relate this to multiplication? If you watch the video below, it will help explain the relationship between arrays and multiplication.
Since you are already multiplication experts with repeated addition, thinking about multiplying in terms of arrays should be a piece of cake, especially after that video. Let's test your skills. Take a look at this array:
What would be the number sentence for this array? Take a minute to think about it, don't cheat by looking below!! There are 5 hearts in each row, and 4 hearts in each column. If you have your multiplication tables memorized, or you can skip count by 5s four times, you can tell me the answer right away. If you still need to count them up, however, it's okay. Just keep practicing!

The number sentence is shown in blue on the left. What is the answer, or product, when multiplying the factors of 4 x 5 ?
If you said "20" then you're a math genius! Good work!
